2 Days Until Fall 100 Men YEG Meeting
We are just 2 days away from our Fall meeting!
For Wednesday night we have three great charities lined up to present to us all the good work they do. You don’t want to miss hearing about their mission. The three charities assist in the following ways:
- We work in 5 key areas – Food Security, Housing, Employment, Primary Health Care, and Education. We have been running low-cost fruit and veggie markets, collective kitchens, kid’s nutrition education, and over 40 community gardens in West Edmonton since 2013. Recently partnered with Community Food Centres Canada to purchase a building on Stony Plain Road and create Edmonton’s first Community Food Centre. Food Centres are welcoming spaces in low-income neighbourhoods where people can share, learn, and advocate for good food. This model moves away from the emergency food charity approach, instead focusing on skill development, self-sufficiency, and food education, resulting in positive impacts on physical, mental, and social health.
- We are committed to promoting and supporting strong children, families and communities in Edmonton for over 33 years. Last year alone, we served over 1500 parents and over 900 children, across Edmonton and the Metro Region, facing multiple vulnerabilities including low-income, mental health, food and housing security and settlement. We support children by providing early learning programs for children 2.5 – 5 years, that helps them develop the critical thinking language, social/emotional and physical skills they need to be successful. Over half of the children we serve are experiencing developmental delays, social or emotional or behavioral problems. We support families by providing workshops, community resources and a safe and supportive environment for family members to share their challenges and needs. Each year we have more applicants than we can accommodate, and would appreciate any amount of support to reduce our wait lists and serve more families in need.
- Operating since 1982, we are long-standing leader in inclusive early childhood education, advocacy and parent leadership. Our work is guided by the vision that communities embrace diversity and uphold the value and rights of all children and their families.
Currently, we supports 95 preschool children with life long developmental disabilities and their families in Edmonton and area to ensure each child’s meaningful participation in all places where children live, learn and play alongside their siblings, neighbors and friends ( in their home, community and kindergarten).
We also actively collaborates with over 150 community based early learning programs and 4 local school jurisdictions each year. Children in our program have diverse abilities due to developmental diagnosis such as down syndrome, autism, global delays, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, children who are medically fragile etc.. and often come to us from the Stollery Children’s Hospital.
All three of those charities are doing great work in the YEG area. Be sure to get to the meeting this Wednesday night.
